Supporter Profile: The Backcountry Hut Company

The Backcountry Hut Company is a designer and manufacturer of prefabricated cabins based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Co-founded by Wilson Edgar and architect Michael Leckie, they specialize in compact, modernist recreational structures, crafted to rigorous standards and designed to leave a minimal impact on our environment. Wilson’s and Michael's appreciation of the environment stems from their deep connection to the great outdoors.

For Wilson, this has meant spending his free time skiing, hiking, mountaineering, running, and mountain biking. He’s an active contributor to the outdoor enthusiast community, sharing his passion with like-minded individuals and groups, including his past role as President of the BC Mountaineering Club.

Michael, also an avid outdoor enthusiast, spent seven adventurous years managing sustainable forestry projects on remote sites across Canada before pursuing his passion for architecture. An avid snowboarder and all-weather surfer, Michael has spent decades exploring the West Coast, from Haida Gwaii in the north to the Baja Peninsula in the south.

The Backcountry Hut Company is highly selective in sourcing materials, prioritizing FSC-certified lumber, or working with manufacturers whose practices they thoroughly understand and approve of. They also wanted to take their commitment to sustainability a step further by establishing their own forest restoration initiative. Through research and conversations with various groups working to restore forests across Canada, they discovered Forests Canada.

The Backcountry Hut Company is inspired by the work Forest Canada does. They believe their support allows them to actively contribute to a healthier planet and create a lasting, positive effect for future generations while staying true to their core principles of environmental stewardship.
