A five-person team from University of Toronto Schools was crowned as the 2026 Ontario Envirothon Champions at the University of Waterloo on May 27.

In an effort to restore the natural beauty and support species conservation in provincial parks impacted by extreme weather events, invasive species, tree loss due to insects and disease, or shoreline erosion, national charity Forests Canada and Ontario Parks have worked together to plant 12,000 native trees and shrubs across nine provincial parks.

Since 2022, national charity Forests Canada and the Greenbelt Foundation have partnered to plant 750,000 trees in the Greenbelt region to enhance near-urban and rural forest cover, increase biodiversity, improve water quality, and reduce flooding and extreme heat close to urban areas.

To better understand the decisions and approaches for post-wildfire forest restoration in Canada, national charity Forests Canada surveyed and interviewed forest managers and tree planting practitioners and is presenting the findings in a report.

A partnership between Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Forests Canada and 30 other partners has resulted in the planting of 10 million native trees and shrubs to the province’s landscape.

Over 120 schools and more than 10,000 students have participated in the Ontario Envirothon since the program launched in 1994.

To support coordinated national action, knowledge exchange, and the development of best practices for forest resilience, Forests Canada is establishing a National Working Group on Post-Fire Forest Recovery Practices.

Since Forests Canada began planting trees in 2004, it has supported the planting of over 50 million – and 25 million of those trees were planted by Conservation Authorities across Ontario.

With the help of its planting partners, Forests Canada has now supported the planting of over 7.1 million trees in Ontario’s Greenbelt, including 750,000 with the Greenbelt Foundation.
