2023: Species at Risk

A species at risk is any species that is at risk of disappearing from where it occurs naturally, whether it is from our forests, our waterways, or even our towns. The province of Ontario has 264 species at risk ranging from special concern to extirpated, each with their own individual needs that have been threatened by a variety of factors, including but not limited to habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, pollution, disease, climate change, and other anthropogenic factors.

In this Ontario Envirothon Study Guide, students will be introduced to species at risk, their conservation status designations, the importance of biodiversity, the threats to species at risk, and what is being done to protect them.
