Tree Marking Program

Ernie began tree marking 15 years ago and credits his training with many of the forestry work opportunities he’s found throughout his career. His certificate allows him to carry out silvicultural tree marking on Crown land, and is also a definite advantage in managing private land forests in many municipalities.

Tree marking involves the careful selection of trees for harvest or retention based on tree size, health, quality, biodiversity and wildlife habitat. In short, tree markers work to create healthy forests.

Lacey Rose is a professional forester. She grew up in a northern mining town in Labrador where she spent a lot of time in the woods. After receiving a Bachelor of Science and Forestry (BScF) from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, she moved to Ontario and became a forester intern for the MNR (2007/08), where she took Level 1 of the Tree Marking Training Program. At that time, the beginning of her career, Lacey learned about forestry in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region.

When I started my career, I worked as a Tree Marker for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, there was no certification requirement at that time. When the management of forests on Crown Land was taken over by Sustainable Forest Licence holders, certification became a requirement. As a Forestry Technician working for Ottawa Valley Forest I took Tree Marking Level 1 and Level 2 courses.
