Ice Storm Story: Debra in Muskoka

Posted: 2025.05.01

We talked with Debra in Muskoka about the recent ice storm in her community. Here is what she had to say:

We were heartbroken and saddened to see the damage the ice storm brought across Ontario. Our cottage community, north of Orillia in Muskoka/Gravenhurst, was impacted significantly, including many neighbours on our private road, about half of whom live there all year.

Severn Bridge, Ontario, is a place that feels like a second home for our family. The river, the trees and the quiet of nature bring us peace. The storm’s impact on trees, homes, and the daily lives of our neighbours was immense, with many on our road facing long power outages and significant losses. Waiting to check on our cottage was nerve-wracking, but we were grateful to find only minor cleanup needed, especially knowing others faced much more.

What stood out most was the warmth and resilience of our community. Local towns quickly set up warming centres and shelters, and neighbours looked out for each other. Volunteers and first responders worked tirelessly. We loved hearing the stories of community support. Kids helped out too by making thank-you cards for the hydro crews. We were glad to help our neighbours and appreciated the quick response from Hydro One, local arborists and others in the community to help with cleanup.

The resources shared by Forests Canada were helpful to us in managing ice storm damage to our own trees as we considered the long-term health of trees on our property. This experience has deepened our appreciation for the importance of caring for our forests and supporting each other in times of need. We are truly grateful for the way our community came together, and for all those working to help Muskoka and Simcoe recover and rebuild.
