Faces of Forests Ontario: Sarah Giles

Posted: 2021.06.03

Favourite Tree: White Pine

Favourite Animal: Fox

We are excited to introduce Sarah Giles, one of two new Planting and Habitat Quality Assessors! Sarah will contribute to the survival assessments of different plots throughout Ontario, including 50 Million Tree Program planting sites, and will focus on evaluating and recording the two- and five-year assessments.

Sarah grew up in Innerkip, Ontario; though its natural surroundings captivated her, her enthusiasm for environmental conservation was first sparked after a back country camping trip to Algonquin Park. Sarah realized she wanted to aid in the preservation of Ontario’s forests so future generations could experience their beauty.

That same camping trip fortified her decision to switch her academic path and pursue a Bachelor’s of Environmental Management in Conservation Management and Planning from Lakehead University. She focused her education on wildlife, forestry, and parks and recreation, and pursued careers like tree planter, forestry assistant, trails technician, and wildlife educator.

Forests Ontario’s stewardship of forest conservation and ongoing mission to create a greener landscape drew Sarah to the organization. Since joining the team, Sarah has been enamored by Forests Ontario’s ability to make afforestation painless for landowners.

Sarah loves hiking, canoeing, and camping in the great outdoors. Due to the pandemic, she has been exploring some new homebound hobbies, including juggling. A true multi-tasker, Sarah always keeps multiple balls in the air!
