Enbridge Gas Greener Future kicked off Earth Day this year with a $50,000 contribution on behalf of its new employee-led initiative, the Local Environmental Action Fellowship (Enbridge LEAF) program, and the company’s existing Corporate Citizenship program. Their contribution went towards supporting Forests Ontario’s planting and education initiatives.
The Enbridge LEAF program supported the planting of 6,250 tree saplings in the areas of Fenelon Falls, Scugog Island, Saugeen First Nations, and North Bay. These trees represent the estimated number of new customers in these areas who are projected to switch to natural gas in 2021. According to Enbridge Gas, they will reduce the utility’s carbon footprint by almost 300,000 pounds of CO2. For comparison, the average Canadian household emits 9,920 pounds of CO2 annually to heat their homes.
Corporate Citizenship Program sponsored Forest Ontario’s Envirothon and Reconciliation Community Tree Plant (RCTP) events. In the spring of 2021, Envirothon reached 100 students and educators across 12 schools with virtual activations and developed five new online educational resources. Forests Ontario and their RCTP program partners implemented two events this fall, which resulted in nearly 170 trees and more than 90 shrubs planted. Local RCTP partners include Six Nations of the Grand River, Kayanase Greenhouse, Grand River Employment and Training, Algonquins of Pikwakanagan, Mohawks of Akwesasne, Algonquins of Shabot Obaadjiwan, Plenty Canada, South Nation Conservation, and Ontario Power Generation.
As a non-profit registered charity, Forests Ontario relies on support from our wonderful donors to help keep our programs running, and we would like to thank Enbridge Gas for their contribution.
