This past Earth Month, our Forests Ontario team was in the field - rain or shine - visiting planting sites with landowners, planting partners and organizations who share a keen interest in creating healthy and biodiverse forested landscapes. These site visits provided fantastic opportunities to connect with our new land stewards while gaining valuable first-hand knowledge from our experienced field advisors and planting partners.
We are grateful for the continued support of our community of individual donors and corporate sponsors who are essential to the work we do. This past April, we were thrilled to attend Eco Jam, an annual benefit rock concert hosted by Smith + Andersen that has contributed to the planting of more than 45,000 trees since 2013. Their investment in natural solutions is an investment in healthier communities across the country!
Back for another spring and even bigger than ever, Forests Ontario’s Take Root program works with municipalities and community partners to make increasing urban tree canopy more accessible. Now in its second year, Take Root Guelph distributed more than 1,000 trees to residents this spring, for a total of over 3,000 trees over the past two years. Take Root is now expanding into York Region where low-cost trees and wildflower kits are currently available for purchase by local residents.
Forests Ontario’s restoration efforts don’t stop there, we want to inspire the next generation to connect with nature through our education programs. Over Earth Month, our Education team ran three events in the Greater Toronto Area, providing over 300 students with interactive learning experiences and sharing the values and importance of healthy, thriving forests. This year also marks the 30th Anniversary of the Ontario Envirothon, a program offering students hands-on, team-based activities in the areas of aquatic ecology, forestry soils and current environmental issues.
Thank you to all of our amazing partners, supporters and program participants who took action to create, restore and care for healthy forests during Earth Month. We're proud to work together with you.
